Executive Director
Palo Alto, California - Full Time

Stanford University, though its affiliate, Stanford (Beijing) Consulting Co. Ltd (SBCC), is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Executive Director (ED) in Beijing, China. This position is housed at the Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU), in collaboration with colleagues from Stanford University and Peking University.

The Executive Director (ED) will oversee the program development, business and administrative functions of SBCC, as well as serve as the Legal Representative. The ED will oversee management of finance, personnel, facilities, and occupants who are delivering ongoing programs, events and activities at the Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU). The ED will report to the management governance board of Stanford Global LLC (the shareholder of SBCC), functioning as the Shareholders’ representative in China and as SBCC’s management authority.

The successful candidate will have responsibility to:

  • Assess the needs of a broad-based Stanford user community in China. In collaboration with SBCC and the Faculty Director of SCPKU, design a business model that will maximize use of SCPKU to fill these needs, while allowing SCPKU to serve its core academic mission.
  • Develop, publish and implement an annual business plan and budget for SCPKU with the goal of making it a self-sustaining venture within 5 years; report progress against the plan.
  • Develop and maintain cordial relationships for purposes of coordination with appropriate individuals and departments at PKU to ensure fulfillment of SBCC and SCPKU needs.
  • Maintain legally compliant employment conditions for SBCC employees.
  • Act as on-site manager of staff for People’s Republic of China (PRC) regulatory purposes, where the employees are otherwise managed day-to-day by programmatic units.
  • Ensure accurate tracking and regular reporting of all financial transactions, in compliance with the Shareholder’s business and financial policies and procedures, and China GAAP. Ensure that adequate internal control systems are in place, documented and functioning as designed.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with the laws and regulations of Haidian District, Beijing and of the PRC, including business licenses and other regulatory filings. Monitor and ensure compliance with US regulations, where applicable.
  • Participate in the development of inter-company agreements, and transfer pricing studies.
  • Oversee purchasing and contract maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Four-year university degree in Business or related field; MBA or CPA preferred. Terminal degree or Ph.D. highly desirable
  • Minimum three years living and working in Chinese speaking country required
  • Minimum of two years comparable experience living and working in an English speaking country required
  • 5-8 years of relevant work experience, including 3-5 years of administrative and financial experience in an international and/or educational organization

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Near-native Chinese language proficiency both oral and written, Mandarin
  • An advanced level of fluent English skills both oral and written to enable effective communications with others whose primary language is English
  • Advanced knowledge of Chinese culture, history and business etiquette
  • Experience managing budgets and developing financial plans
  • Thorough knowledge of PRC and US GAAP accounting principles and practical experience in business fundamentals
  • Understanding of international tax principles, including transfer pricing
  • Understanding of and ability to execute systems of internal control

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

  • Salary will be commensurate with experience
  • At the time of hire the candidate must be legally authorized to work in China
  • Must comply with all PRC visa, work authorization, and tax related laws and regulations as a condition of employment
